چکیده

The recently discovered gamma-ray burst (GRB) GRB 060218/SN 2006aj is classified as an X-ray Flash with very long duration driven possibly by a neutron star. Since GRB 060218 is very near ∼ 140 Mpc and very dim, one-year observation by Swift suggests that the rate of GRB 060218-like events might be very high so that such low luminosity GRBs (LL-GRBs) might form a different population from the cosmological high luminosity GRBs (HL-GRBs). We found that the high energy neutrino background from LL-GRBs could be comparable with that from HL-GRBs. If each neutrino event is detected by IceCube, later optical-infrared follow-up observations such as by Subaru and HST have possibilities to identify a Type Ibc supernova associated with LL-GRBs, even if gammaand X-rays are not observed by Swift. This is in a sense a new window from neutrino astronomy, which might enable us to confirm the existence of LL-GRBs and to obtain information about their rate and origin. We also argue LL-GRBs as high energy gamma-ray and cosmic-ray sources. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts — acceleration of particles — elementary particles

TeV-PeV Neutrinos from Giant Flares of Magnetars and the Case of SGR 1806-20

We estimate the high energy neutrino flux from the giant flare of SGR 180620 on December 27, 2004, which irradiated Earth with a gamma-ray flux ∼ 10 times larger than the most luminous gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected. The Antarctic Cherenkov neutrino detector AMANDA was on-line during the flare, and may either have detected high energy neutrinos for the first time from a cosmic point sour...

High-Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos from Gamma-Ray Bursts

— A complete model for the origin of high-energy ( > ∼ 10 14 eV) cosmic rays from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and implications of this hypothesis are described. Detection of high-energy neutrinos from GRBs provide an unambiguous test of the model. Evidence for cosmic-ray acceleration in GRBs is suggested by the detection of anomalous γ-ray components such as that observed from GRB 941017. Neutron β...

Ultra-high energy cosmic rays, cascade γ-rays, and high-energy neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are sources of energetic, highly variable fluxes of γ rays, which demonstrates that they are powerful particle accelerators. Besides relativistic electrons, GRBs should also accelerate high-energy hadrons, some of which could escape cooling to produce ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Acceleration of high-energy hadrons in GRB blast waves will be established if hig...

Cooling of Accelerated Nucleons and Neutrino Emission in Gamma-Ray Bursts

Using Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate photopion production from Fermi-accelerated protons and the resulting neutrino production in gamma-ray bursts. Unless internal shocks occur at quite large distance from the center, ultra high-energy protons are depleted by photopion production and synchrotron radiation. Internal shocks at fiducial distance cause neutrino bursts, which accompany gamm...

Gamma Ray Bursts as Possible High Energy Sources

Gamma-ray bursts are known to be sources of high-energy γ rays, and are likely to be sources of high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. Following a short review of observations of GRBs at multi-MeV energies and above, the physics of leptonic and hadronic models of GRBs is summarized. Evidence for two components in BATSE and EGRET/TASC data suggest that GRBs are sources of high-energy cosmic rays...
